The racing track at Spa has yet again caused another horrific crash, with six drivers in the W Series needing medical checks after the incident and two taken to hospital for further assessment.
The crash occurred during the qualifying event for the W Series, an all-female racing competition, as multiple cars struggled with the notorious Eau Rouge section of the track.
British drivers Sarah Moore and Abbie Eaton, Spain’s Belen Garcia, Beitske Visser from the Netherlands, Norway’s Ayla Agren and Fabienne Wohlwend from Lichteinstein were all involved in the horrific crash.
W Series racing director Dave Ryan was relieved all drivers caught up in the chaos were not seriously hurt.
“Thankfully it seems that everyone is okay,” Ryan said.
The cars have stood up unbelievably well to what looks like a massive crash, which is good to see.”
The W Series provided an update on the status of the two drivers who were sent to hospital, tweeting: “Ayla Agren has been discharged from hospital. Beitske Visser is still in hospital — a CT scan has revealed no injuries. She is still awaiting the results of a leg X-ray but is in good spirits and discussing the accident.”
Visser, who was sent airborne in her car, posted a selfie on Twitter from hospital and said: “Thank you all for your messages. That was a very scary one but I think I had an angel on my shoulder, I’m very sore but luckily I have no fractures”.
Luckily for Moore and Eaton, they were able to make it back to the paddock after the incident, and the latter was already keen to get back out on the track.
“Just hope they can get the car fixed for tomorrow,” Eaton said.
“When can I get back out again?”
The track at Spa is no stranger to shocking accidents, with many stemming from the Eau Rouge corner that has racers accelerating uphill.
French driver Antoine Hubert was tragically killed on the track after a high-speed crash during a Formula Two race, after the 22-year-old collided with U.S. driver Juan-Manuel Correa at 257km/h.
Earlier this year, Jack Aitken and Davide Rigon were involved in a serious incident during the Spa 24 Hours race that left both drivers hospitalised.
