Congress Manifesto Promises Statehood for J&K, Scrapping Agnipath |
India's main opposition party Congress has released its manifesto ahead of general elections later this month. The manifesto, which is being called Nyay Patra, has 25 guarantees under five "pillars of justice". Though election manifestos are not legally binding, they do offer insights on policy direction. The Congress is promising to restore statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, scrap the Agnipath military recruitment system and legally guarantee a Minimum Support Price for farmers. Other guarantees include legalising same-sex marriage and removing the current government in the state of Manipur. The ruling BJP has called the manifesto a "bundle of lies".
