About 50 miles from Salt Lake City, Utah are two landmarks that travelers passing through the state have been looking at as they whizzed by for over 150 years, The Devil's Slide and the 1000 Mile Tree. Even though both landmarks are just a short distance from each other, they couldn't be more different.
The Devil’s Slide consists of two parallel limestone strata that have been pushed out of the mountainside slowly over tens of millions of years. The unique look of the Devil's Slide has inspired a number of legends about its origin over the years, with quite a few involving the devil sliding down the mountain to make the landmark.
On the other hand, the 1000 Mile Tree was just a tree that so happened to grown exactly at the spot where the trains marked 1000 miles from Omaha, NE. The tree was an important marker for people riding the train west, as it helped signify just how far they had traveled from where they started.
Both landmarks are on private property but are visible from Interstate 84.
