The 1973 Chilean coup d'état led to the installation of General Augusto Pinochet as dictator. On September 11, 1973, the military, with backing from the United States, overthrew President Salvador Allende's democratically elected government. Allende's socialist policies had provoked strong opposition from domestic elites and foreign powers wary of leftist influence in Latin America.
On September 11th 1973 Chilean fighter jets bombed the presidential palace in Santiago. Allende and men loyal to him made a desperate last stand in the Moneda Palace. They were overcome by Chilean soldiers and Allende shot himself. In the inmediate aftermath of the coup left-wing sympathisers protested against what had happened. The Chilean military responded with a severe crackdown. Many were interned in concentration camps that were set up across the city. Infamous was the National Stadium were prisoners were being interned, tortured and executed.
All in all dozens died during the coup and thousands would be murdered in the 16 years to come during Pinochet's military dictatorship.
