Visitors could soon be banned from entering Lake Eyre under a plan to protect the popular outback tourist destination for its traditional owners.
A draft management plan released for public consultation is set to prevent any recreational access to the lake bed without permission.
The lake is a registered site under the Aboriginal Heritage Act and is co-managed by the State Government and the Arabana Aboriginal Corporation.
Lake Eyre Yacht Club commodore Bob Backway has discussed the impact the new proposed management plan could have on tourism in the area.
“I’ve been receiving calls from tourists operators since I put it on our website – they're not happy at all,” he said.
“The only people who are happy are the people who run joy flights because that’s the only way you're going to see the lake.”
