Sky News U.S. contributor Michael Ware says the result of the Virginia governor race will be a “window” into the political future of the United States.
Former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe and first-time Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin head to the polls in a dead heat, and Mr Ware says the vote will provide insight into the political mood of the divided nation.
“In many ways, people are looking at this gubernatorial race in Virginia as a window into the political present and potentially the political future of this country, it’s a way to get a snapshot, potentially, of the voters’ moves,” he told Sky News Australia.
“This is going to be a close election and could have a national impact and I think the key will be the exit polls because whichever way this goes.
“What’s going to be most valuable, I think, is learning what motivated Virginia voters to go to the polls and what motivated them to vote the way they did.
“That, I think, will be the most precious resource to come out of this election if we know what is driving people to the polls.”
