Welcome! A chilly day! I explored from Valentine Ave and E. 188 Street to Poe Park and Grand concourse. It was quite cold when I walked across Edgar Allen Poe Park. The weather station says it was 14 degrees F, but 2 degrees F outside with the wind chill factor. Anyway, my body tolerates the chilly weather better than I do with the hot weather. In this video, there is a little bit more outside noise because I did not have my favorite windjammer mic. Overall, it was an excellent walk. #thebronx #valentine #edgar
VALENTINE AVENUE
The story of Valentine Avenue in the Bronx is said to honor the late Isaac Valentine, a young blacksmith, and farmer who built a house near the former Boston Post Road in the village of Fordham back in 1758. This was when the Bronx was a collection of farming hamlets and not even part of New York City. The war ruined Valentine, and in 1792 his house was purchased by Isaac Varian. That is the story behind the name, no romantic connection in any way. The Valentine-Varian House still stands, a monument to the old agrarian Bronx and the borough’s second-oldest house.
POE PARK
Opened in 1902, the park was named after famous American poet Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), who rented its white farmhouse, now known as Poe Cottage, for $100 a year from 1846 to 1849.
Built in 1812, it was here Poe wrote “The Bells,” “Eureka,” and “Annabel Lee,” while living with his wife Virginia.
The cottage was originally located near the intersection of Kingsbridge Road and Valentine Avenue but was moved in 1913, about 450 feet north of its original location, before opening to the public on November 5, 1913.
