Not really. No. Early sources don't indicate that. It's a misconception.

There is this very popular idea that Pythagoras essentially created his own religious or quasi-religious sect where he was honored as a god, and his disciples had to follow a large number of convoluted rules, keep the basic doctrines in secret, and so on and so forth. You’ve heard this story before. And it is not exactly true. Let’s try and demystify all this.
