In anticipation of the world premiere of Ravi Shankar’s only opera 'Sukanya', the Bagri Foundation presents the final episode of 'The Music Room', a short online film series, exploring dialogues between classical Indian and Western music with the opera’s conductor David Murphy.
In the tenth episode, we explore Ravi Shankar’s only opera, ‘Sukanya’, with its world premiere tour taking place from 12 – 19 May! David Murphy, a long-time collaborator of Ravi Shankar, has worked with Shankar’s daughter Anoushka to bring the Indian music legend’s innovative magnum opus into fruition. In the film, David explains the concepts behind Ravi Shankar’s opera. Shankar wanted to bring to life in a modern context, the interdisciplinary practice of the Indian tradition, the interconnectedness of music, dance, drama and stagecraft. ‘Sukanya,’ inspired by a story from the legendary Sanskrit epic of the 'Mahabharata', fuses together East and West styles, combing an ensemble of Indian musicians and Western singers; bringing together the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Singers and dancers from the Aakash Odedra Company.
Dr Nandakumar of the Bhavan Centre, London, explores ‘Sukanya’ in a historical context and a special clip from the opera in progress gives a glimpse into Shankar’s vision.
The Bagri Foundation is delighted to support Ravi Shankar’s groundbreaking 'Sukanya', a groundbreaking production between the Royal Opera House, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Leicester’s Curve theatre.
