Fossilized lightning strikes are pseudo-fossils that trace the path of lightning as it travels through sand or sediment. The energy of the lightning strike as it flows through the sand leaves behind beautiful glass tubes. We call these glass tubes fulgurites. They are unique in that they are the only rock that exhibits characteristics of all three rock types at once; igneous (rock that has been melted), metamorphic (rock that has been chemically transformed), and sedimentary (rock that has been physically transformed). This unique fact also means that they are Florida's only natural igneous and metamorphic rock. The fulgurites found in this video were found in the Cypresshead formation of Lake Wales Ridge, Florida. This location, in the center of the state, was a system of sand dunes that existed around a million years ago and was left as water levels dropped during the Pleistocene epoch. Every fulgurite that we found in this video represents a lightning strike of enormous energy. Most strikes would not contain enough energy to vaporize and melt the sand to form a fulgurite.
