As we age, we typically experience a decline in our ability to hear high-frequency sounds due to presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss. This occurs primarily because of damage to the tiny hair cells in the cochlea that detect high frequencies, structural changes in the cochlea, and degeneration of the auditory nerve.

Cumulative noise exposure over a lifetime and certain health conditions or medications can also contribute to this loss. These factors combine to reduce our sensitivity to higher frequencies as we grow older.
