Were the colonial militia’s fighting tactics really that bad??
Definitely not!
But…the redcoats definitely viewed them as being inferior.
When the first hostilities of the American Revolution broke out between the British Army and the colonial militia at Lexington and Concord in 1775, the British Army believed they were fighting against mere farmers with pitchforks, amateur fighters who lacked the effectiveness of a regular army.
Often called “rebels” or “provincials” the colonial militias were criticized by British officers for their lack of discipline, unprofessional appearance, unconventional tactics, and unreliable leadership.
However, the British Army would eventually see how much they underestimated the determined Americans.
It was through unconventional strategy, increased organization, and strengthening leadership that the Americans would prove to be a fighting force to be reckoned with, one that would turn the world upside-down as they forced the British Army to ultimately surrender, and won freedom for America.
