Even after equipment is shut down and locked out, kinetic energy may still be present and dangerous to workers. This video is a helpful training tool that describes what kinetic energy is, identifies potential sources in the workplace, and illustrates controls you can implement to reduce the risk to workers.
Some sources of kinetic energy in the workplace may be hidden from view inside machinery, which can be hazardous if not identified and controlled. Other pieces of equipment may be moving so fast that it’s hard to see if it’s in motion, such as a circular blade or a roller.
Employers are responsible for implementing controls to ensure all kinetic energy is dissipated before workers interact with equipment.
