"I really like to be a part of a team, to be of service with these incredibly talented, capable people. We all bring our own little piece to the puzzle."
Meet Clackamas County Search & Rescue (CSAR) volunteer Nick Rolfe!
Rolfe is a member of the CSAR ground team and technical rope rescue team. Being a part of a team -- working collectively to achieve something outside of himself -- is what motivates Nick in his dedication to SAR. This is no surprise, given Rolfe's decades of experience as a professional musician.
Specialized as a pianist and keyboardist, Rolfe built his career in New York City, collaborating with top musicians from around the world, including Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and the Eurythmics, just to name a few.
Rolfe's musical and SAR pursuits mirror each other in a lot of ways. Both are highly technical and often involve creative problem-solving, and success in either always comes back to that keyword: teamwork.
"What I've learned from both music mentors and search and rescue mentors is that we don't know the answers to everything," he said. "We're not the best at everything, We don't know everything.... We all bring our collective knowledge together and our collective abilities and, as a collective body, now all of a sudden we're unbreakable."
