After his security forces reportedly shot dead a number of people yesterday, Kenya’s president has spoken of treacherous acts. But he was referring to the storming and burning of the parliament amid mass protests against his planned tax hikes - in which doctors say at least 13 were killed. He said those behind the vandalism were ‘criminals’ who were posing as peaceful protesters. Hours earlier, lawmakers had passed (in the third reading) the hugely unpopular levies, opposition to which has mobilised thousands of mainly young people nationwide. Peaceful protest was met with a heavy-handed police response, with batons, water cannon, tear gas and rubber - as well as real - bullets. Ruto vowed that those who vandalised parliament would not go ‘scot-free,’ promising to bring down the full force of the security apparatus on them.
Who do you think is the criminal?
