Dr. Clevens: Let's talk a little bit more in detail about selecting the proper shape chin implant and what incision to use to place a chin implant. Chin implants come in many different shapes and sizes but there are three main categories of chin implant. One is what we call a short or a button chin implant. This type of implant is short and, in my opinion, should rarely be used. Although this implant can be placed through the mouth, the implant really does not recreate the proper anatomical shape of the ideal chin.

Instead, I use what is known as an anatomical chin implant.
Instead of being a short button implant that just augments this part of the chin, the anatomical implant is a little longer with the wings on it. That helps to restore and recreate an ideal shape and position of the chin. Anatomical chin implants cannot be placed with an incision through the mouth. Instead, anatomical implants are placed with a small incision approximately half to two-thirds of an inch in length underneath the chin.

The third type of implant that I often use is what is called a jowl or Pre-jowl implant. In patients who have not only a weak chin but patients who have some jowling, we can use a variation of the anatomical implant. It's a little longer implant with wings like an anatomical chin implant but it also has some augmentation in the jowl area to diminish the appearance of your jowls.

In summary, in most patients, I'm using an anatomical chin implant to recreate an ideal chin contour or in patients with jowling, I'm using what's known as a chin-jowl implant. This is my view on how to achieve the ideal chin augmentation.
