At the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal's 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Scuderia Ferrari's performance was hampered by issues related to tire pressures and weather conditions, leading to a cycle of setbacks. The track's combination of similar corners and stop-and-go sections did not facilitate technical recovery during qualifying. Mistakes made in the final free practice session were corrected without fully resolving the difficulties, and grid positions and race issues hindered a thorough performance analysis. The upcoming race in Barcelona is crucial for assessing the top teams' strength. Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren have each secured a win this season, and Mercedes could have joined them in Montreal if not for George Russell's errors. Evaluating the cars under consistent conditions is now imperative.
A year ago, Ferrari's SF-23 underwent aerodynamic changes to initiate a new direction. Today's SF-24 is technically superior, having moved away from the sidepods' bathtub design. While initial problems were not quickly resolved, this season the SF-24 has demonstrated potential and consistency. Pre-season testing revealed some weaknesses, managed well at times but less so in races like China and Canada. The car struggles with soft tires but excels on hard ones, making qualifying more critical than the race. In Spain, the SF-24 is expected to perform well at its level.
With tight battles and small margins in qualifying, a few hundredths of a second can determine entry into Q3, highlighting the need for improvement. Ferrari's technical office has fast-tracked the second aerodynamic package for the Spanish Grand Prix, originally planned for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Technicians and engineers in Maranello are working around the clock to introduce new elements to the SF-24 in Spain, aiming to enhance low-speed performance with an updated floor design.
Reports from Italian media indicate a high probability that both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will have the new specifications for the first free practice session at the Circuit de Catalunya. The team plans to conduct comparative tests in FP1 to optimize the aerodynamic package's potential. Additionally, modifications to the rear bodywork, including the tray area and ramps towards the diffuser, and improved deflector elements are expected. This concerted effort aims to counter McLaren's advances and fend off Mercedes, who outperformed Ferrari in Canada for the first time this season. Ferrari must maintain its development pace to compete with the improving Brackley outfit.
