In the past, parents and teachers pushed memorization of “sight words” because it made students sound like better readers.
Instead of kids sounding out each sound in a word, they would read the whole word… and it seemed like they were a strong reader!
But the reality is they were just memorizing a handful of words.
REAL reading involves pulling apart the sounds in the word, matching those sounds to letters, and blending the sounds back together to read the word.
The more practice little ones have doing this activity, the more words they will orthographically map into their brain…and then they’ll be able to read words without sounding out each sound.
But it’s a progression. You can’t start with reading the whole word. You must start with breaking the word up into its sounds, just like this student is doing.
It might seem slow at first, but I promise you the slower you go in the beginning, the faster your child will progress!
