Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been too close to the Trump administration and too partisan when it comes to American political affairs according to Labor Senator Tim Ayres.
"And that's damaged Australia's national interest," Mr Ayres told Sky News.
He said Scott Morrison went on a tour for two weeks in the United States and during that time "didn't meet a senior Democratic official or politician".
However, he did "go to a Donald Trump rally with the thumbs up with everybody with the 'Make America Great (Again)' hats and all of that nonsense," Mr Ayres said.
It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on his election victory, highlighting the importance of the US-Australia partnership.
