Ebonising Wood with steel wool and vinegar
Two cheap ingredients, make a great ebonising stain for tannin rich woods.
To darken the stain, flood the surface with tannin prior to application. A tea solution is all you need for this.
Experiment with woods, to see the different effects it has.
On open grain timber, you can follow up by scraping the surface, to leave just the grain ebonised.
Top off with an oil, varnish, etc. finish to really make it pop.
