One of the little toggles within the Wahoo Fitness App for Kickr profiles is the "ERG Mode Speed Simulation". Today we'll run though exactly what that is and what it does.

First up - This setting has no impact on software that calculates virtual speed via power/weight/virtual gradient/etc. So on or off, this has zero impact on Zwift, Trainer Road, Sufferfest, all those kinds of platforms that rely on POWER to calculate speed/virtual distance.

So what is it for?

Well if you're using a head unit or app that does record speed (and distance) from the Kickr's "speed sensor" then it does have an impact on those readings.

1 - Default (off) - The Kickr will simply transmit the effective speed of the flywheel. So the faster the flywheel spins, the faster it'll report you're going.

That's all fine on a single speed bike.... but when you change gears you might be doing the same effort but the flywheel will be spinning at different speeds. This relates to ERG mode where 300W in the 53/11 results in a very different flywheel speed than the 39/25. Same effort, but very different virtual speeds reported - That doesn't really make sense....

2 - ERG Mode Speed Simulation ON - The Kickr will act more like how other software works and report a speed value based on your effort (watts). So 300W in ERG mode will give you a resulting speed value of say x KM/h (or miles per hour) regardless of the flywheel speed. In theory this will give you a more accurate virtual estimate of speed/distance across different gearing and efforts.

Summary -
- ERG Mode Speed Simulation has no impact on third party software such as Zwift, Trainer Road, etc.
- It is only applicable when you're using the 'speed' reported by your Kickr within a bike computer, or other basic training app.
- Switching it on will give more realistic/consistent virtual speed/distance recordings with your head unit / basic apps relating to the efforts you're doing.
- Does it change the ride experience in any way? No.
