Back in February, Jonathan Field and his friend William decided to spend a day pushing their limits on gear at Sam's Throne in Arkansas. As often happens when we see how hard we can pull, there were some big falls.
Jonathan sent in this whipper William took on the classic line "Windy Armbuster" (5.10d).
"The climb is notorious for its tricky and strenuous gear placements on the overhanging face along with a couple sizable run outs with the longest being the one to the upper shelf before the final moves to the anchors," Field told Rock and Ice.
"I had just gotten the onsight, so William was feeling confident about his flash attempt and I already had my camera set up from my send and fortunately decided to film his attempt as well," Field said. "I was belaying as William cruised through the lower section but got hung up on the face due to trouble finding adequate gear.
"I had found an ideal tricam placement in a small horizontal, so it was added to his rack, but little did I know, he hadn't ever place one. He said, 'Fiddling with the tricam I'd never placed before was pumpy and scary.' He ended up down climbing a couple times to back up some gear placements. This ultimately led to him pumping out at the top of the runout, just before the good rest on the shelf, and taking the massive whip on a #1 C4 backed up by a medium sized stopper."
Glad you guys tested your limits and still had a safe day out - good stuff!
Happy Friday and climb safe this weekend!
