Hello! I’m Kara with Laughter Yoga Together. Welcome to this Laughter Yoga Pranayama Session: Anulom Vilom. Please join me in exploring the depths of Laughter Yoga by learning this rewarding deep breathing practice.
Anulom Vilom is also called alternate nostril breathing (and alternate cross breathing). According to Laughter Yoga Founder, Dr. Madan Kataria, it is considered one of the best pranayama exercises because it brings physiological balance to your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Your left nostril is connected to your parasympathetic system, which is considered the cooling “rest and digest” system. Your right nostril is connected to your sympathetic system, which is considered the heating “fight or flight” system.
This video utilizes the methods learned from Dr. Kataria, as well as the Department of Yoga Institute of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences Bangalore.
Before we proceed, here’s a quick reminder about health and safety guidelines. If you have any of the following conditions (high blood pressure, cardiac problems, ulcer, colitis, hernia, advanced piles, epilepsy, weakness, severe back pain, pregnancy, major surgery in the last 3 months) or any other health concerns, please consult your doctor before trying this. If you become lightheaded, please stop. If you are new to this pranayama exercise, please start slowly and build your practice. And as with all Laughter Yoga, only do what feels good to you.
How to Do Anulom Vilom
Sit in a comfortable position with your back and neck straight, keep your mouth closed, and put your left hand on your left knee. Raise your right hand and fold your index and middle finger toward your palm. You will be closing your right nostril with your thumb and your left nostril with your ring finger.
Each breath should be slow, steady, and controlled. First close your right nostril with your thumb and exhale slowly through your left nostril. Then inhale slowly through your left nostril. Now close your left nostril and exhale slowly through your right nostril. Then inhale slowly through your right nostril. This completes one round. It is recommended that you do at least 9 rounds, but you can build your practice and do more when you have time.
Now we’re ready to try Laughter Yoga Anulom Vilom together. Please join me.
Awesome! You can practice Anulom Vilom in the morning to start your day balanced, anytime you need to reduce stress and anxiety, and in the evening to relax. Many people, including me, experience a calming effect from Anulom Vilom.
Thank you so much for joining me! Have a wonderful day, breathe deeply & LAUGH ON!
