North Sulawesi in Indonesia is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. Despite the global pandemic and the movement restrictions it has brought on, wildlife trafficking continues to thrive in North Sulawesi. According to the United Nations Development Programme, the value of the illegal wildlife trade in Indonesia alone is estimated at up to US$1 billion per year. As we dive into this murky business, we find out that long-standing traditions and appetites for the exotic are pushing wildlife species ever closer to extinction.
