The five-man sled is a staple of football training equipment. These metal behemoths can make a significant difference in helping build strong linemen and athletes through repetition and hard work. Players can train their initial strike, extension and drive, all while building cohesion among offensive and defensive line units. It’s not person-to-person. It’s not hitting a light dummy or a pad with a trainer on the other end. This is charging at a large, metal structure, hearing the rust ring off of it after each attack and truly grinding it out, preparing for the season’s battles in the trenches.
Training with a five-man sled begins with lining up face-to-face with one of the padded silhouettes on the end of the structure. At the sound of the whistle, players can pop their hands up through their mock defender, get a full arm’s extension and drive the sled back against the resistance for added practice. It’s great for training point-of-attack without an additional player serving as defender.
Teamwork is also created when using the five-man sled in football practice, since the five players lined up must work together in order to move the sled back with any sense of force or direction. Everyone should be cohesive and share the weight, so that the sled can move in a straight path backwards.
The five-man sled is a pivotal piece to any football team’s training. Incorporate a few sled drills into your next practice and add some depth to your line. Listen to that pop and ring of a hard-hit sled as you watch your linemen build strength, camaraderie and skill.
