In October 1970, three years before the passage of the Endangered Species Act, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker was listed by the US government as an endangered species. Since then, many people have been working to reverse the declines, and now, the woodpeckers are close to being delisted. Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are what is known as a “keystone species.” In other words, they are critical to the health and functioning of the longleaf pine ecosystem as a whole, and it is important that the species remains healthy. As Rob Meyer knows, it takes a continual effort to make sure the population becomes stable. Meyer was our April 2023 guest speaker, and in this Jay Chat, he discusses his work with the private sector, and the scientific work that is helping bring these woodpeckers back. Unlike some of our other speakers, Meyer works in the private sector, rather than for the government. Meyer has much experience in conservation, especially with Red-cockaded Woodpeckers.
This is a recording of a zoom presentation that took place on 15 April, 2023. Our next Jay Chat is scheduled for 20 May, 2023.
