With one shot, Mo Creek simultaneously continued the amazing underdog story of Sideline Cancer and dissolved the chance for Overseas Elite to win their fifth TBT championship.
Sideline Cancer was down by one and three points away from completing the Elam Ending. Creek had gotten the ball on the right wing on a pass from Marcus Keene, who had a game-high 22 points and the full attention of the defense.
An Overseas Elite defender closed in with a hand right in Creek’s grill. He could have dished it off. He could have panicked and thrown the ball away.
However, with the game on the line, he came through in the biggest of moments with the biggest of shots. He lofted up a three, and after it cascaded through the net went sprawling down to the other end of the court to man the bottom of the team’s celebratory dog pile.
“That was Jermaine Marshall,” said Creek after the game, referencing his former teammate on Sideline Cancer who died suddenly in January 2019. “He would have told me to shoot that every time. I know he’s looking down on us right now.”
Knocking off Overseas Elite, the four-time champs that added NBA veteran Joe Johnson, is Sideline Cancer’s fourth straight win as the lower seed. This time they had to do it after trailing by double digits for much of the first half.
