Two variations on a theme: the Sao Paulo passes have your posture low as you try to contort your opponent's hip and head direction and force the closed guard to open up.
The arm trap version is a nice way to introduce students to these style of guard passes. The Roger Gracie version of the Sao Paulo pass is pretty brutal on your opponent and as long as you really pin down that far shoulder, you can almost guarantee him opening up his guard.
