Some of the cutest denizens of Pacific coast of Costa Rica, these balloonfish are found in many estuaries swimming behind mangrove roots. By staying in the slipstream of the mangrove roots, the fish are sheltered from the strong tidal currents of the estuary. This stops the fish from being swept back and forth, and lowers the energy the need to expend to stay in the same place. This also means that these resourceful animals will swim behind other objects that provide them shelter from the currents and this can even include a Go-Pro or an inquisitive biologist. A unique chance for some great close-ups of these beautiful animals!
