The Antibes in Vintage pine is one of Gaziano & Girling’s signature casual models and a great example of their capacity to magically combine design, detail, and craftsmanship to create absolutely beautiful and immediately-striking shoes. Even at its price point of about $1,300 with shoe trees, these shoes are a good value when you take into considering what you get, such as the incredible, almost-bespoke craftsmanship, oak bark tanned outsoles, highest-grade French calf leather, Tony’s design aesthetic, and the hand finishing and polishing.

DESIGN
It is, indeed, hard to create a casual loafer that has not already been done. But somehow Tony Gaziano managed to do so, which is a testimony to the shoe designer’s updated English aesthetic that was fundamental in launching the company. This simple twisted piece of leather is an elegant and striking alternative to the more common penny strap found on similar casuals.

MATERIAL & FINISH
Graziano & Girling’s desire to bridge the gap between traditional RTW and bespoke is also seen in their choice of materials used to make their shoes. They use the same quality French calf uppers in their shoes as they do their bespoke ones, and all of the patterns are clicked, or cut out, by hand, allowing them to perfectly place pattern pieces on only the best sections of the hide.

The Antibes features a beautiful light tan color with slight burnishing, making it perfect for the summer months, and is inspired by the namesake of the shoe: the French city of Antibes, one of my favorite spots on the French Riveria, which is nestled just east of Canne and down from Monte Carlo. The light color in combination with the casual aesthetic truly invokes the French Rivera.

CONSTRUCTION
The factory’s ability to consistently produce outstanding quality and construction is the work of Dean Girling, whose work as a bespoke shoemaker has allowed him incredible insight and control over the production of a larger number of shoes. It is his insight into bespoke construction that when combined with Tony’s design aesthetic successfully bridges the world of RTW and Bespoke.

CUSTOMIZATION AND MTO FINISHES
The Antibes model can also be extensively customized through Gaziano & Girling’s made-to-order program. You can choose from any of 7 last shapes, 100 different leather choices, and an infinite number of custom patina finishes. This literally makes for thousands of combinations that one can use to customize to these shoes to your own personal tastes and desires.

AVAILABLE SIZES AND FIT
The Gaziano and Girling Antibes are available stock from a UK Size 5 to UK Size 13 and in a standard E width. UK sizes are a half-size smaller than the equivalent US shoe size. So, if you are a 9.5 in an American shoe, such as Allen Edmonds, you would want to purchase a UK 9.0. The same is true for widths. A UK E width is equivalent to a standard US D. However, the shoe can be ordered in a narrow D width or wide F width at no extra charge.

SUMMARY AND ENDING
This is our first review of the casual side of Gaziano & Girling’s RTW offerings, and we are just as excited about their ability to design and produce an exceptional casual as we are their incredible success designing the most formal of shoes, the black cap toe oxford, which we have previously reviewed. This further cements in our minds Gaziano & Girling’s ability to produce both city and country shoes at the highest level.

For those who want something more than a completely machine-made shoe but aren’t ready to make the jump to fully bespoke, Gaziano & Girling is a perfect option to consider. There are just a small handful of companies offering factory-made shoes with this level of hand construction and finishing.
