Former Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson has recounted the moment he found out about the 9/11 attack, describing it as "a seminal moment”.
Mr Anderson said he was in a motel in Canberra when he first saw the event "unfolding" on television.
"Phone started ringing its head off - 'get your television on', from my press secretary," Mr Anderson told Sky News host Catherine McGregor.
"And I'm in a completely befuddled state.
"Saw the whole thing unfolding it was ... a seminal moment.
"You’ve got to record for history's sake as best as you can, an event, or events as they unfold.
"Around 20 years is a good time to have a good look back, trying to work out whether you learnt the lessons ... from it.
"On the hundredth anniversary of this we'll look back and say that was a profound moment in the journey of humankind.
"That's pretty big, but I actually think it was.
