This is a video about the historic Nandana Fort, nestled in the picturesque Salt Range of Pakistan. This region is rich in history and natural beauty, spreading over four districts, making it a perfect destination for history buffs and nature enthusiasts.
Nandana Fort is a treasure trove of history. Built 1500 years ago from local stones, the fort stands proudly on the hill of Baghanwala. Although the fort remains are scarce, traces of two ancient temples and a mosque still whisper tales of the past.
The fort is historically significant as it was here that the renowned scholar Al-Biruni measured the earth’s circumference with astonishing accuracy in the 11th century, a feat that the West could not replicate until the 16th century.
During his stay at Nandna, Al-Biruni studied science, philosophy, and culture, describing Nandna as a great center of knowledge. This location not only served as a scientific hub but also as a strategic military site.
It was the last capital of the Hindu dynasty and witnessed fierce battles, including the famous clash between Mahmud Ghaznavi and the local Hindu rulers. After his victory, Mahmud Ghaznavi installed a Muslim ruler and built a mosque, marking the beginning of Muslim rule in the area.
Our adventure began with a challenging yet exhilarating climb up the mountain, taking us about an hour. For those who prefer, there is also a path for horses.
As we ascended, we encountered several graves on a nearby mountain, belonging to Muslims from the same historical period. The entire area, known as Baghanwala, meaning the place of gardens, is filled with natural beauty and historical intrigue.
From the vantage point of Nandana Fort, we enjoyed breathtaking views of Baghanwala village. This oasis, located just before the mountain pass, is a serene and beautiful place to spend time.
The village is renowned for its cooperative and hospitable residents, who added warmth to our visit. Emperors Akbar and Jahangir mentioned Nandana as a favorite resting and hunting spot in their travelogues, adding to the historical allure of this place.
If you're planning a visit, it's essential to choose the best time of year to fully enjoy the experience. The natural water fountains and lush gardens make Baghanwala village a refreshing retreat, while the historical sites provide a deep dive into the past.
The journey to Nandana Fort from Malakwal City is about 27 km, making it an accessible day trip for travelers. But watch the video to find out WHY! And let me know what your favorite fort in Punjab is?
