This video is posted for informational purposes. Practitioners of combat sports should do these activities with a clear understanding of what kinds of things are possible.
Edit: I have been informed there is a gofundme for the injured competitor. Please help if you can

A few points, this is an extremely well run competition. The promoters and organizers are top notch and the rules are designed to protect all competitors. The injured athlete’s corner and coaches also behaved and coached excellently the entire day. And the other competitor did not do anything out of the ordinary. This was just a freak accident, and we pray for the speedy recovery for the guy who was injured.
All training and competition in combat sports carries a certain degree of risk. Much of this risk is totally avoidable and a good gym culture will mitigate most dangerous situations. However, there is always and element of risk every time you step on the mat, it doesn’t matter if its MMA, Judo, BJJ, Wrestling, Kickboxing, Boxing, etc. Just be aware of this risk and do your best to look out for your partners and have them look out for you in training. In competition don’t be malicious, and before you enter know that there is a degree of risk you are taking that cannot be avoided.
Let’s look at what happened. Always the greatest danger in combat sports is falling body weight. The force formula is mass x velocity = force. A 125 lb. woman can cripple a 250 lb. man by falling on the wrong part of his body and the reverse of this is doubly true. Most falling bodyweight situations develop from the feet, this makes starting standing inherently more dangerous than starting from the knees. However, to be a complete martial artist you must have skills and knowledge standing. A common thing that happens is body weight is pulled over an extended and braced limb in a direction that the joint is not designed to bend.
In this match both guys are friendly and relaxed as the ref gives instructions. When they start they go after it, and these are some pretty big boys so that ups the risk.
00:22 The competitor in the black and white rash guard goes for a hari goshi type throw at the exact instant the guy in the yellow shorts steps his left leg out totally extended at the same time he is taking a big step with his right leg. This put all his weight on the extended leg. As the guy in black and white thew his leg out over the other guys left thigh it created a block that pined the foot to the ground as both men’s weight went over the knee in an outward direction that the knee does not bend, causing a catastrophic injury.
In this situation, in that split second, I don’t see anything that could have been done differently, total accident.
In your own training know these type injuries are possible. Practice your breakfalls and try to avoid hard posts with your legs unless you are well aware of what you are doing. And if you feel a situation like this develop do not fight the throw by straightening your leg. Allow yourself to be thrown and go from there a lot of these type injuries come from fighting the throw by bracing a leg.
One more thing, this is life advice not financial advice. I strongly encourage anyone reading this who trains to have health insurance and if you are the bread winner of your family, have a plan to cover day to day expenses for a few months. This is universal advice no matter what you do, do with it what you will.
Again be safe and kind to each other in training, you only have one body. We do not post this video to cause fear, everything in life caries risk, just be aware of what can happen. We pray for the injured guy to recover quickly.
