(18 Mar 2021) As Bosnia faces soaring coronavirus infections and rapidly-filling hospitals, two doctors from Turkey have arrived in the capital Sarajevo to help and offer their insight in the treatment of COVID-19.
Accompanied by their Bosnian colleagues, the doctors from the Amerikan Hastanesi (American Hospital) in Istanbul on Thursday were visiting patients at the Dr. Abdulah Nakas General Hospital in Sarajevo.
Bosnia is seeing a huge rise in infections and hospitalizations after a period of relaxed measures and the winter season that saw ski resorts staying open unlike in most of Europe.
Sarajevo General Hospital, which has been treating COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic, already has 181 patients, many of whom require oxygen and intensive care.
Doctors say 20 more were being admitted on Thursday morning.
Dr. Ismet Gavrankapetanovic, the General Hospital manager, said he was pleased that the doctors from Turkey had come to share their experiences.
"We appreciate highly that the delegation of our colleagues from the American hospital is visiting at this tough moment," he said.
Wearing protective suits, the doctors were checking on the patients together on Thursday morning during the tour of the hospital.
Dr. Siran Keske of the American Hospital praised his Sarajevo colleagues, but said there was always room for improvement.
"We should improve both our clinical practice and we should be updated for improving and for decreasing the mortality of the patients," he said.
