Harvard-educated former doctor Lai Ching-te leads Taiwan’s latest polls at early stages of an election campaign to replace current President Tsai Ing-wen who has held the office since 2016.
Mr Lai has raised concerns amongst both Taiwanese and US diplomats that he could cross Beijing’s "ultimate red line" with comments saying Taiwan must “stand with democracy or default to communism”.
The international spotlight on current Vice President Lai is sure to intensify as the election progresses.
