At least five churches were vandalised in Pakistan’s Faisalabad district on Thursday over an alleged incident of blasphemy. Videos circulating on social media showed mobs of hundreds getting into places of worship, destroying properties and some even climbing atop and kicking the holy cross.
Worse, Muslim clerics were seen inciting the mob to ransack the churches if the police failed to act fast and decisively against the alleged blasphemers.
But how do laws in Pakistan, an Islamic republic, deal with charges of blasphemy and what are the punishments? How might the Shais be persecuted after Pakistan made the blasphemy laws stricter in January this year? After the Ahmadiyya community, which was the target of earlier blasphemy laws, Shias might also face persecution in Sunni-majority Pakistan.
