Hi everybody! My name is Satra and I started #skateboarding at 31 years old. There's been a build up of why I picked up skating so late. As a kid I always loved playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater especially Underground on the PS2. It wasn't until a combination of a few things such as the pandemic, having gyms closed, having skateboarding at the Olympics, and YouTube recommending me videos of skateboard progressions (shoutout to agathemro's one year skateboard progression video) that really inspired me to pick up skateboarding.
Skateboarding has been one of the best thing that I've done. I used to be inside all the time, interacting with no one and only playing video games. But now I'm outside daily, making new friends, getting exercise, setting goals for myself and seeing me achieve them. It's all been great for my mental health. I can't believe just riding on a piece of wood can give you so much of an adrenaline rush.
I really hope that this video will inspire you to pick up skateboarding - just like all the progression videos that I watched that motivated me.
There's so much to learn in skateboarding. My recommendation is to try learn all three skating styles. Start with #freestyleskateboarding tricks because there's a lot of easy tricks and it gives a good foundation in balance. Then I reckon move on to simple street skating that don't require ollies (because ollies are the hardest thing to learn), basically find obstacles and be creative of how to conquer them, then try #transitionskateboarding because it's super fun and a killer workout.
Big shoutouts to Sarah Park-Matott's skateboarding channel for teaching me SO MANY TRICKS (ollie, kickflip, no comply 180, introducing me to freestyle)! Also thanks to Braille Skateboarding, Skateparklessons with JB, NeverStopImproving and many more channels for teaching me about 60 tricks now.
The early clips are filmed with an iPhone SE (first edition) then when my phone shattered I bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I edit videos with DaVinci Resolve.
I really wanted to saved all these clips for a one year progression but then the one year progression would be way too long, so I'm going with 6 months. Trying to size this down to 10 minutes was impossible. The next one year progression will be filmed mostly in landscape.
