Operation Just Cause was the 1989 United States invasion of Panama to depose Manuel Noriega, the military dictator who had become a major drug trafficker in the region. The operation began on December 20, 1989, and lasted until January 31, 1990. The United States, with the support of several Latin American countries, mobilized over 27,000 troops to overthrow Noriega, who was then arrested and later extradited to the United States to stand trial. The operation resulted in the deaths of several hundred Panamanians and 23 U.S. service members. The invasion marked the beginning of a new era in Panamanian history and helped to reestablish democracy in the country.
