We tested (and were super disappointed with) the hugely popular RoyalBaby bike, specifically the Royal Baby Freestyle 14 inch. In this review, we'll tell you why this bike doesn't live up to those 4.5 stars it gets on Amazon!

After testing over 400 kids bikes and products (cheap kids bikes & pricier ones) we're going to give it to you straight: the Amazon reviews on this Amazon bike are wrong. We'll go over those reasons in this RoyalBaby Bike Review.
(Go ahead and go down the Amazon review rabbit hole: [ Ссылка ]. Full disclosure, that's an affiliate link.)
1. The sizing on these bikes is awkward
If a bike doesn’t fit, nothing else really matters.
Royalbaby’s sizing chart on Amazon is not very helpful. It says that their 14” bike can fit kids from 37.4 - 47.2”. That’s a 10” height range. There is NO WAY that a 14” bike can be a good fit for kids within that large of a range.
Every child we’ll show you fits in RoyalBaby’s height range.
One tester is 37.5” tall, the other is 39.5” tall riding with the seat set to at the minimum. It looks like the bike fits them, right?
BUT… the minimum seat height is too high to be safe!
Our shorter 3-year-old can’t touch the ground AT ALL when seated on the saddle. Our taller 3-year-old can only touch the ground with one tip toe if she leans to the side.
Being able to touch the ground allows the rider to learn to start the bike on their own. Both of these little riders are completely competent on a pedal bike, but are not able to get the RoyalBaby started on their own because they can’t push off the ground.
Being able to touch the ground allows a child to use their feet to help them stop and to keep themselves upright if they start to fall. (And YES, it’s very possible to fall even using training wheels.)
2. Royal Baby Bikes are VERY heavy
With a heavy steel frame and heavy components, the Royal Baby 14″ weighs in at 21.7 lbs with training wheels. That’s a lot of weight for a toddler to handle.
This is heavy, even for a cheap bike. For example, Walmart’s popular 12” Huffy Next (which we don’t like either) only weighs about 15 pounds with training wheels.
A heavy bike is harder to handle and kids get fatigued much more quickly.
3. The brakes aren’t great
The coaster brake (or back pedal brake) will offer the primary stopping power for this bike. But coaster brakes are a problem. They make it harder to learn to ride a bike because kids naturally pedal backwards when learning to pedal or trying to regain their balance. The coaster brake will stop them in their tracks!
The RoyalBaby freestyle 14 also features a single handbrake on the left hand, which is attached to the front wheel. The brake is single-pivot style which has very limited stopping power. It’s an old style of brake that good quality bikes generally don’t use anymore.
4. Training wheels make it very difficult to learn to ride a bike
If you’re looking for a bike for a 2, 3, or 4 year old, we encourage you to look at a balance bike instead. Balance bikes are so much easier and more fun to ride than a bike with training wheels AND they have so much potential for independence and adventure. Training wheels make riding hard!
5. Decent quality and durability
Despite all of these drawbacks, we will say that the Royalbaby Freestyle bikes are pretty solid and durable, so they do have that going for them.
So what’s the bottom line?
While the Royal Baby 14 inch Freestyle bike is much better than many bikes you’ll find at a big box store, that’s not a good reason to buy a bike. With a frame that’s a good size for a 3-year-old, it’s seat height is too tall for that same child to safely ride. By the time a child is tall enough to safely ride the bike, the frame is getting too small.
So what do we recommend instead? If your child has never had a bike – we recommend a balance bike! Check out our list of favorite balance bikes below.
If your child is a balance bike graduate, check out Guardian Ethos 14″ or 16” bike Better in every way, it’s well worth the additional $100 for a great riding experience. (Links to that below as well!)
