We put the Renault Clio RS220 Trophy head-to-head against the Renault Megane RS265 Cup, in a lap-time battle around the 1.3-kilometre Haunted Hills hillclimb circuit in Victoria.
Teaming a 162kW/260Nm turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a dual-clutch automatic transmission and a launch control system, the limited edition Renault Clio RS220 Trophy claims 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 235km/h.
With a 195kW/360Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder buddied up to a six-speed manual transmission, the Renault Megane RS265 Cup claims 0-100km/h in 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 255km/h.
Both are front-wheel-drive, both feature limited-slip front differentials and both were tested with their electronic stability control (ESC) systems in ‘Sport’ mode.
The Clio has its 18-inch alloy wheels shod in ultra-sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, the Megane’s 18s wrapped in slightly less aggressive Michelin Pilot Sport rubber.
At 1270kg, the Renault Clio RS220 Trophy is also 141kg lighter than the 1411kg Renault Megane RS265 Cup.
Let the battle begin…
