Victorian Drury Lane was a maze-like labyrinth of dirty alleys with fighting, shouting, drinking and destitution. In the 1800s, the street was infamous as a slum of dark and dirty maze-like alleys with low lodging houses to accommodate working class people. Charles Dickens described the street as having more filth and squalid misery than in any part of London. Travel back in time, with an account by a Victorian journalist, to the dark corners of Drury Lane in the early 1880s, to discover how people lived and worked among the dirt and fetid refuse of its shadowy, crowded streets.
