Chris Froome hailed 'the biggest win of my career' and took a giant step towards the Tour de France title by winning alone at the summit of Mont Ventoux after the longest stage of this year's race.
It was an effort that saw him collapse just after the line and receive oxygen. 'I can't remember taking oxygen before,' said Froome, 'but I was feeling faint and short of breath at the top.'
And no wonder, after he had ridden the final 7.2km at 'full gas', as he described it, putting his rivals to the sword one by one.
