The Grattan Institute's Stephen Duckett says some European countries have been too “trigger happy” in pausing their AstraZeneca vaccine rollouts over blood clot concerns.
“So far the evidence looks like the rate of blood clots is sort of what you’d expect given there’s been 17 million people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine,” he said.
“Blood clots are relatively common. what you have to look at is the age distribution of the people who have the clots because clots are more common in older people than younger people.
Mr Duckett said the European Medicines Agency and the United Kingdom equivalent are examining each individual case and have so far determined they look like ordinary clots and were not caused by the vaccine.
“I think there are some countries that are too trigger happy to pause the vaccine rollout,” he said.
