The light, coming from a high point, illuminates the face of La Gioconda and gradually loses intensity in the lower part of the painting, leaving her hands in semi-darkness. The mysterious half-smile has always been a source of theories and stories: Leonardo wanted to represent the grace and sweetness of the faces of the women of Florence in that evening light.
