While some scholars may feel offended by these creative reinterpretations of Nordic cultural history, there is actually some truth behind this unlikely association. Odin, known as Jólnir and Jólföðr, had a historical connection to the Yule or Christmas season, often lingering around Yule and attempting to entice Norwegian kings away from Christianity. Personifying important holidays, such as Yule, is a characteristic of North European animism, and throughout history, various figures have taken on the role of the Yuler. So, while Santa Claus isn't exactly Odin, he is a masking personification of the Yule holiday, embodying the spirit of Yule as a celebration of capitalist self-gratification.
