Speech-Language Pathologist Barbara Schacter discusses some major communication milestones in your child’s first year of life. One of the first will be eye contact. When a baby and parent look at each other, it’s key for communication. Next is joint attention, meaning when a parent and child share an event, there is a togetherness about it. Both are focused on the same thing. Start teaching your baby imitation and speech sounds. Babies are especially interested in sounds, like “the cow goes mooooo”, “the car goes vroooooom”. Sound is essential because sounds turn into words, words turn into phrases, and phrases turn into sentences.
