Popular tennis content creator Gill Gross picked Denis Shapovalov to advance to the fourth round of Wimbledon.
Denis Shapovalov is currently ranked 121 in the world and has been one of my favorite players to watch on tour. I would be ecstatic if he made it to the fourth round, but Gross's pick doesn't make much sense.
Shapovalov has a 10-15 record in 2024 and has yet to make it past the Round of 16 in all tournaments this season. He has won one title on tour and hasn't made it back to the top 10 rankings since 2020. Shapovalov's best finish at Wimbledon was in 2021, where he reached the semifinal and lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic.
As I said, I hope Gross is right because he is a fun player to watch. He plays left-handed, hits a one-handed backhand, is athletic, and looks cool. But his prediction seems too optimistic given his lack of success recently.
Shapovalov plays No. 19 seeded Nicolas Jarry tomorrow morning in the first round. Jarry won't be a walk in the park as he has made a few ATP Tour finals this year, has a big serve, and is a solid player.
