Why is Bamboo the construction material and industry of the future?
As deforestation is happening rapidly, our wood resources are getting exhausted and it is essential to find a renewable material which could substitute wood. In such a scenario bamboo is being researched on and is getting developed as a mainstream construction material. Bamboo is a fast growing woody plant which is available in abundance and it takes only three to five years to mature. Note that trees take 30 to 50 years to grow. The popular species of bamboo plants are Dendrocalamus giganteous, Dendrocalamus hamiltonii, Bambusa balcooa, and Bambusa tulda.
The advantages of using bamboo is that the plant require very little water to grow and pesticides or chemicals are not required to speed up their growth. Another plus is that bamboo plants release extra oxygen and absorb more carbon dioxide when compared to other trees. The strong roots of bamboo hold the soil together, stabilizes it and prevents soil erosion.
Bamboo can be considered for multiple uses because it is highly durable, fully biodegradable, is light in weight, is easy to work with and has a very high tensile strength and is easy to transport. Also, since the natural surface of bamboo is smooth and neat it does not require painting or polishing.
Bamboo is being considered as a construction material because it lasts for 30 to 40 years, it is cost-effective and different methods can be applied on bamboo to mould it into different shapes. .

In the construction industry bamboo can be used as a fencing material, for constructing walls and to create roof support systems like purlins , trusses or rafters. Bamboo is widely used for scaffolding because of its strength and flexibility, and because it can be easily cut into a variety of lengths.
The high bending strength and elasticity of bamboo makes it suitable for constructing earthquake-resistant structures. Bamboo can also be used for manufacturing bamboo boards for fabricating door frames and door shutters, cane furniture, bamboo flooring and bamboo laminates. .
However the main disadvantages of using bamboo is that it can damaged due to water and can shrink during the drying stage and is prone to fungal or termite attacks. The circular shape of bamboo does not enable a good jointing system and bamboo has a hollow core which tapers towards the top. Since bamboo is inflammable, it has to be treated with a fire-resistant coating for protection
