Families,
I hope everyone had a good long weekend last week and remain safe and well.
A few updates for you….
First of all, I would like to announce that Sarah Gordon was hired as the Dean of Students. She will begin on June 1. Sarah returns to K-12 education after working for Convo Communication for four years. Before that, she worked at RSD as the 4th Grade teacher for three years and at Metro School for the Deaf in Minnesota. Sarah brings experience in creating a positive learning culture and evidence-based responsive teaching strategies to deliver access to learning for students. Please join me in welcoming her to our team.
Secondly, as all of you know, last week Governor Cuomo made a decision to have the extended school year (ESY) program done remotely this summer. That means not all of our summer programs will be offered this summer, such as the Independent Living Skills program and the work experience program. Susan Ogden will contact you to check if your child will participate in the ESY program this summer. Please communicate with Mrs. Ogden on this so that we may prepare a high quality program for all those involved.
We will continue to set up a plan for students/families and staff to retrieve their personal items before the end of the school year. We will also set up a plan for you to drop off your child’s school loaned devices. You will receive instruction on this from the school/dorm administrators.
A decision on the last day of remote learning for the regular school year will be shared soon. We are still waiting for information from NYSED and/or the governor regarding the 180-day rule.
We know our students want and need to be back in school with their teachers and peers, and we are eager for their return and are preparing for that to happen. However, the decision to open schools will be made by Governor Cuomo and is based on New York State’s four-step reopening plan with dates dependent on how each phase impacts the level of COVID-19 cases in the Rochester area. The reopening of schools is in Phase 4.
Our staff are working hard to plan a virtual event to celebrate the accomplishments of our students in lieu of normal end-of-year programs. We sympathize with everyone on the loss of these annual programs, but we hope to make the virtual event memorable for everyone involved. This event will not include graduation. Plans for a graduation ceremony have been announced and the tentative date for the graduation ceremony is August 6, pending approval from Monroe County Public Health Department and NYSED.
Thank you for your continued support and patience during this time.
Antony A.L. McLetchie
Superintendent/CEO
