In this film, RSN Chief Executive & Exhibition Curator, Dr Susan Kay-Williams, talks about one of six border designs by Arts and Crafts designer Walter Crane.
In the early days of the RSN, we worked with a number of the Arts and Crafts designers in particular Walter Crane who created his first designs for us around 1876 and we worked with him right through to the end of the century. This is one of six border designs featuring the iris, a popular motif in the latter part of the 19th century, particularly influenced by Japonisme. This is a curtain border design which our customers would have chosen for us to work either along the bottom or around their entire curtains.
The RSN Embroidery Studio today creates new pieces for customers from around the world, from small football badges and cufflinks to large wall hangings and embroidery for furniture, no commission is too large or two small. We also carry out restoration and conservation work, and all work is carried out at our base in Hampton Court Palace, south west London.
